Twenty-four (24) years after South Africa’s last appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final was defeated by Tijani Babangida’s brace, the two teams will square off again on Wednesday to determine who would advance to the AFCON final.

That time, Nigeria co-hosted with Ghana, and Babangida’s goals in the first and 34th minutes took care of business in front of a full stadium at Surulere, Lagos.

While Nigeria overcame Angola 1-0 on Friday to go to the semi-final, South Africa managed to hold off a resilient Cape Verde team thanks to a masterful penalty shootout performance by goalie Ronwen Williams.

While both teams have faced off in AFCONs since then, it hasn’t happened in the penultimate round. Nigeria has won every meeting that has taken place.

Nigeria defeated Bafana Bafana 4-0 in the group stage in Tunisia in 2004. Their final AFCON match took place in the quarterfinals, which Egypt hosted in 2019. With goals from Troost-Ekong and Samuel Chukwueze, Nigeria won 2-1.

DR Congo and Ivory Coast round out the semi-final matchups.
